Near to Shinjuku Station, which I’ve mentioned before, is the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. This was originally a garden for the royal family but is now a national park. It includes both Japanese and European style garden/park areas as well as a greenhouse with exotic plants. As usual, there’s a bunch of photographs. I spent about two hours wandering around this tranquil area near the centre of Tokyo. We’ve had some rain the last couple of days. Not enough to be annoying but enough to clear the air somewhat and it was a bright but cool day. I’m not sure if the blossom on the trees is expected to be appearing this early or if it’s a result of the very mild winter, but a number of the trees had already started to bloom. Tree blossom seems to be a big thing in Japan and there were lots of people photographing the blooms. So many, in fact, that it was awkward to get a decent shot of some of the trees in bloom without it being full of photographers and cameras, many with high resolution zoom lenses on them. Still, I did get a couple of nice shots, myself.

There was one interesting occurrence while I was in the garden. I was walking along a path which formed the right hand branch of a “Y”, moving down the branch towards the junction. The left hand branch was slightly higher ground. There were a few trees between my path and the other fork, but they didn’t obscure the view. Over on the other branch were two young men with cameras and two young women wearing min-skirts (not incredibly short ones, mid-thigh or slightly longer). I’d put them all in their mid 20s (but what do I know about judging Japanese people’s ages, especially at 40 yards or so). One of the young women was perched on the border of the path which was quite low, and arranged her skirt to show off her legs to the young man taking photos of her, off to her right a bit back down the path. Ahead of me on my fork were an older couple, maybe late fifties or sixties (but, again, what do I know). The male half of this couple was taking advantage of the posing of the young lady to take photos of his own. Since he was directly in front of her, she was being rather more revealing to him than to her associate. The female of the couple on my path looked like she’d just sucked a lemon. I’m not sure if she was embarrassed by her partner’s behaviour, or embarrassed by my obviously noticing his interest, but she definitely did not look entirely happy.

I’m not sure if the young women and men were models and professional photographers or what. I’m fairly sure the young lady was aware of the older photographer, though, so I suppose if she didn’t mind…
