In addition to the usual duties of my position at Reading and my primary
research work I have been involved in the following research-related
activities:
- I was a member of the Programme Committee for the 2001 Calculemus conference,
and a member of the Programme Committee for the 2004, 2005 and 2006
MKM conferences, and was being Conference Chair of the 2006 MKM conference.
- I edited a Special Issue of the International Review of Law, Computers and
Technology in 2006. I have refereed papers for the International Journal of
IT and Management and the UK's Higher Education Academy conference
on ICT education amongst others.
- I have refereed research grant proposals for the Council for Physical
Sciences of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO)
and the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
- I supervised the PhD of Gottliebsen at St Andrews (who successfully defended
in 2000 and is now a lecturer at Queen Mary University of London). I
am the second supervisor of two PhD students at the Informatics Research
Centre in Reading.
- I have been involved in government consultations regarding open source
software use, been interviewed by the BBC for current affairs programmes
and websites and given a University of Reading Public Lecture.
I am a founding member of the Open Rights Group, a lobbying and
information organisation dedicated to improving human rights in
the UK with regard to digital technologies.
